Mission Statement

The mission of the Association for the Preservation of Cape Cod is to promote policies and programs that foster the preservation of the natural resources of Cape Cod. APCC's goals are to:

1. Protect Cape Cod's groundwater, inland surface water, and coastal water resources.

2. Preserve Cape Cod's open space.

3. Promote responsible, planned growth for Cape Cod's communities.

4. Strive for the achievement of an environmental ethic.

This Annual Report is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Norton H. Nickerson, environmental champion, friend of APCC. We all recognized Dr. Norton H. Nickerson when we saw him on Cape Cod, in Dennis, on the Bass River. Or up in Boston, at the State Office Building, or in the State House. Or in Medford, at Tufts University, in biology class, or elsewhere on campus. He was the one who was always hale and hearty, tall and tanned. Dr. Nickerson for many years personally lobbied the Legislature for conservation commissions, wetlands protection, open space, and wildlife habitat preservation. He was always persistent and persuasive. As a result he usually was successful. His untimely passing during 1999 at age 73 was a great loss to us all. We are confident that hundreds of conservation commissioners, thousands of environmental students, and millions of residents and visitors to Cape Cod, now and forever have been touched by the life's work of Norton Nickerson. We are all better off, as are the living creatures and natural beauty of Cape Cod and the rest of Massachusetts, for Dr. Nickerson having lived, and lived so well. Gregor I. McGregor Environmental Attorney
